Welfare Considerations

Little ringed plover welfare at gravel pit breeding sites is primarily threatened by disturbance from dog walking, fishing, and recreational activities. Adults repeatedly flushed from nest sites cannot maintain egg temperature, and chicks separated from parents by disturbance are vulnerable to predation and chilling. Seasonal wardening at known nest sites, information boards for site visitors, and temporary exclusion zones around active nests substantially improve breeding welfare. Maintaining some areas of bare gravel with access restriction is the key management intervention.
