Long-eared owls at winter roosts are in an energy-critical state, having invested significant reserves in nocturnal hunting the previous night. Disturbance that flushes roosting birds in daylight forces unnecessary energy expenditure and exposes them to diurnal raptor predation. Birds that cannot maintain adequate energy budgets through undisturbed roost rest may abandon roost sites or suffer weight loss that compromises survival and subsequent breeding. Protection of known roost sites through wardening and access management is a direct welfare intervention.
