Long-tailed tits face acute welfare risk during prolonged cold weather. Their tiny size and high surface area to body mass ratio means they lose heat rapidly and must feed almost continuously during daylight hours in winter to fuel overnight thermogenesis. In severe winters, insufficient feeding time causes energy deficit that leads to fatal hypothermia overnight. Habitat fragmentation that reduces availability of dense hedgerow roosting sites forces birds to roost in suboptimal locations with less thermal protection. Cold snaps that persist for more than a few days cause population crashes as individual birds succumb to energy deficit.
