Macaroni Penguin Welfare: Breeding Colony Decline in Sub-Antarctic Islands

Macaroni penguins are the world's most numerous penguin species but their populations have declined by over 50% since the 1970s, with welfare harms from prey depletion, predation, and climate-driven breeding failure.

Welfare Considerations

Chicks in poor krill years receive insufficient food, becoming progressively weaker before death from starvation over days. Adults that cannot find adequate krill must choose between extended foraging trips leaving chicks unbrooded, or returning with insufficient food. Predation by giant petrels and skuas targets weakened chicks. Adult penguins killed by killer whales and leopard seals experience acute predation events. Fur seal incursions into nesting colonies cause nest abandonment and trampling of eggs and chicks.
