Malayan Tapir Welfare and Road Mortality in Malaysia

Malayan tapirs are endangered across their range in peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Thailand. Road mortality has become a leading cause of death as highways fragment their forest habitat.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Tapirs struck by vehicles suffer severe traumatic injuries from their bulky body form. Their nocturnal activity patterns and lack of road avoidance behaviour create predictable mortality hotspots at regular road crossings. Pregnant females killed on roads cannot contribute to the next generation in a species with very low reproductive rates (one calf every 2-3 years). Wildlife underpasses have been installed at some Malaysian road sections with evidence of tapir use.
