The marsh tit is a declining woodland bird closely associated with ancient deciduous woodland whose welfare depends on the availability of mature trees with natural food resources.
Loss and fragmentation of ancient woodland eliminates this highly sedentary species from areas where woodland patches fall below a critical size. Deer browsing removes the shrub layer structure marsh tits require for foraging. Grey squirrel competition for nest sites and food resources is an additional pressure. Their strong site fidelity means local extinctions are permanent without recolonisation.
