The marsh tit is a specialist of ancient lowland deciduous woodland and has declined severely as old-growth woodland has been lost or degraded across England and Wales.
Marsh tits need structurally complex woodland with a diverse understory and ample dead wood. Intensive management, deer overgrazing, and woodland fragmentation have degraded many sites. Deer exclosures and active coppice management can restore suitable habitat and support population recovery.
