Mink Welfare and the Decline of UK Fur Farming

The UK banned fur farming in 2000, but fur products from overseas farms continue to be sold. Mink on fur farms worldwide experience severe welfare deprivation.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed mink in wire cages exhibit high rates of stereotypic behaviour — pacing, repetitive circling and self-mutilation — indicative of severe psychological distress. Their semi-aquatic nature means denial of swimming opportunities constitutes significant behavioural deprivation. Mink are also highly stress-reactive animals: farm handling and the cage environment cause chronic cortisol elevation. The UK ban represents a welfare standard that should be adopted globally.
