Minke Whale Welfare in UK Waters

Minke whales are the most commonly encountered whale in UK coastal waters and face welfare threats from ship strikes, entanglement, and acoustic disturbance.

Welfare Considerations

Ship strikes from ferries and commercial vessels cause traumatic injury and death. Entanglement in fishing gear causes distressing drowning or physical mutilation. High levels of anthropogenic noise from seismic surveys and shipping affect communication and feeding behaviour. Stranded minke whales require specialist welfare response.
