Natterjack toads are the UK's rarest amphibian, restricted to coastal dunes and inland heaths with welfare critically linked to pond availability and habitat management.
Natterjack toad welfare depends on ephemeral pool availability for breeding. Pools that dry before tadpoles complete metamorphosis cause mass larval mortality. Invasive vegetation stabilising dunes eliminates the open sand habitats natterjacks require. Each natterjack individual represents a significant fraction of the UK population, making individual welfare conservation-critical. Pond management through scraping, vegetation removal, and water level management directly creates and maintains breeding habitat. Translocation programmes have established new populations at suitable sites, with individual welfare monitored during capture and release.
