Great Crested Newt Welfare and Garden Ponds

The great crested newt is one of the UK's most legally protected animals. Garden ponds are increasingly important breeding sites as field ponds are lost across the agricultural landscape.

Welfare Considerations

Great crested newts disturbed in their terrestrial habitat or from ponds can be injured by digging, mowing and construction work. Accidental killing during construction is the most common welfare and legal issue. Translocation of populations affected by development must follow strict protocols under Natural England licence to minimise welfare impact. Garden ponds with good plant structure and no fish provide excellent breeding habitat.
