The noctule is Britains largest bat, foraging over woodland and grassland. Loss of mature trees with roost cavities and insect decline threaten its welfare and population.
Noctule welfare is primarily threatened by loss of veteran trees providing roost cavities and by aerial insect decline from pesticide use and habitat loss. Tree surgery removing hollow trees destroys roosts and kills roosting bats unless surveys are conducted first. Noctules have large home ranges requiring connected woodland across landscapes. Supporting tree surgery inspections before felling, retaining veteran trees, and reducing pesticide use across landscapes are the most effective welfare interventions.
