Ospreys were extinct as a breeding species in England for almost 200 years before recolonising naturally in the early 2000s. Conservation projects and public engagement have accelerated their return.

Welfare Considerations

Ospreys that collide with power lines or wind turbines suffer traumatic injuries. Lead poisoning from fish containing lost angling weights causes neurological symptoms and death. Disturbance at nest sites, including by well-meaning photographers with inappropriate equipment, triggers nest abandonment. Migrating birds face hunting pressure in southern Europe and West Africa. Fish stocks depleted by overfishing and pollution reduce foraging success and impair chick rearing.
