The Eurasian oystercatcher depends on intertidal shellfish beds for food and its welfare is threatened by the decline of cockle and mussel populations around UK coasts.
Food shortage forces oystercatchers to spend more time foraging, reducing energy reserves and body condition, particularly in winter. Cold weather events can cause mass mortality when birds cannot meet energy requirements. Oystercatchers with poor body condition are less able to breed successfully and more vulnerable to disease and predation.
