The purple heron is a rare but increasingly regular visitor to UK wetlands, with occasional breeding attempts as the species extends its range northward.
Reedbeds are heavily threatened by drainage and development. Purple herons require large continuous reedbeds for successful breeding. Disturbance during early colonisation attempts can prevent establishment of breeding populations.
