Conservation and welfare of one of the UK rarest breeding waders on Shetland.
Red-necked phalarope welfare on Shetland depends on peat bog pools with abundant aquatic invertebrates and dense vegetation for nest concealment. Drainage of blanket bog eliminates habitat immediately. Welfare-informed management at key sites controls predators, maintains water levels, and restricts access during breeding. With so few pairs, disturbance of individual nests has significant population-level consequences.
