Red pandas are increasingly rare in the wild and managed globally through zoo-based studbook breeding, with welfare challenges from the species' specific environmental needs.
Red pandas in warm climates suffer heat stress if temperature management is inadequate. Their highly specialised bamboo diet requires year-round supply of appropriate bamboo species. Social structure is solitary except during breeding — housing pairs long-term can cause chronic aggression. Captive red pandas show stereotypic pacing in inadequately enriched enclosures. Well-designed facilities with temperature control, bamboo variety and appropriate space allow good welfare and contribute to conservation genetics.
