Ringed Plover Welfare on UK Coastal Beaches

Ringed plovers are ground-nesting waders of coastal shingle beaches whose welfare is severely threatened by recreational disturbance, predation and coastal development.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Ringed plover welfare during the breeding season is acutely threatened by human disturbance on beaches. Adults use distraction displays to lure people away from nests but sustained disturbance prevents incubation. Eggs and chicks are cryptically coloured but vulnerable to trampling. Dogs running freely on nesting beaches kill chicks and flush adults repeatedly. Nest abandonment from sustained disturbance is common at popular beaches.
