Individual sand lizard welfare depends on access to warm, open sandy habitats for thermoregulation, foraging, and egg laying. Loss of bare sandy patches through scrub encroachment prevents females from finding oviposition sites, causing egg retention and reproductive failure. Cold or wet summers reduce the available hours for basking, limiting energy acquisition for growth and reproduction. Isolated populations on fragmented heathlands face genetic bottlenecks that reduce fitness and welfare over generations. Conservation translocations carry short-term welfare costs of capture and handling but support long-term population viability.
