Sand martin welfare is concentrated around the breeding colony, where social density and nest site fidelity create both opportunities and vulnerabilities. Colony site fidelity means that bank collapse or disturbance eliminates entire year's breeding attempts — a welfare and productivity loss without remedy within the season.
