Conservation and welfare of one of England's most habitat-specific butterflies on chalk grassland.
Silver-spotted skipper welfare depends on maintaining very short, open chalk grassland with bare ground. Overgrazing and undergrazing both reduce welfare — the species requires a specific, narrow structural range. Welfare-informed grazing management uses sheep and rabbits at appropriate densities to maintain the short turf and open patches the species needs. Rabbit population declines from VHD have affected some sites.
