The silver-washed fritillary is the largest UK fritillary butterfly and a spectacular woodland insect. Its welfare depends on a specific combination of violet-rich woodland floor and open sunny glades.
Silver-washed fritillary welfare depends on the structural diversity of ancient deciduous woodland — a closed canopy provides shade for violets to grow; rides and glades provide sun for adult nectar feeding and territorial display. Intensively managed woodland with closed rides or no coppice management loses the structural diversity that fritillaries require. Traditional coppice management that creates a rotating mosaic of open and shaded areas is the most effective welfare intervention.
