Siskin Welfare and the Role of Garden Feeding

The siskin has benefited enormously from garden feeding with nyjer seed and peanuts, extending its range and providing winter survival support to what was once a scarce visitor.

Welfare Considerations

Garden feeding genuinely benefits siskins during cold winters and before spring food availability improves. However, disease transmission through poorly maintained feeders, particularly Salmonella and trichomonosis, can kill significant numbers. Feeder hygiene is an animal welfare responsibility.

What You Can Do

Provide nyjer seed feeders cleaned weekly with disinfectant
Keep feeding areas free of accumulated waste
Remove feeders temporarily if sick birds are observed
Provide water baths cleaned regularly near feeders
Report sick bird clusters to Garden Wildlife Health project
