Skylark Welfare on Farmland

Skylark populations have declined by 60% in the UK since 1970, with loss of nesting habitat in autumn-sown cereal fields the primary driver — skylark plots are a proven welfare and conservation intervention.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Skylark welfare is directly affected by agricultural practice. In dense autumn-sown cereals, skylarks cannot land, walk, or nest by spring because the crop canopy is too thick. Failed nesting attempts represent repeated reproductive failure without physical injury but with behavioural frustration. Skylark plots — un-sown gaps of 4x4 metres in cereal fields — allow successful nesting at minimal cost to the farmer. This is one of the most cost-effective welfare and conservation interventions in UK farmland management.
