The Slavonian grebe is a rare and beautiful Highland loch breeder, with the UK's entire breeding population confined to a handful of lochs in Scotland.
The tiny breeding population is highly sensitive to disturbance, mink predation, and water quality changes. Mink, introduced from fur farms, prey directly on eggs and chicks. Climate-driven changes in prey fish availability affect breeding success.
