Sparrowhawks have colonised urban and suburban habitats, bringing welfare considerations around window strikes, starvation in winter and human-wildlife conflict over garden birds.
Urban sparrowhawk welfare is primarily threatened by window strikes during high-speed pursuits of prey. Collisions cause brain injuries, broken necks and skull fractures. During winter, food scarcity particularly affects newly independent juveniles. Illegal killing by some householders who view sparrowhawks as threats to garden birds represents both a welfare and legal problem.
