The Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) has recolonised the UK as a breeding species after centuries of absence. Conservation welfare is supporting an expanding population.
Recolonising spoonbills face welfare challenges including nest site competition with herons, disturbance from recreational activities at coastal wetlands, and food availability in estuaries affected by water quality. Colony disturbance causes abandonment — spoonbill colonies in the Netherlands showed that human disturbance within 300m causes breeding failure. Climate change is expanding the wintering range of Dutch spoonbills, supporting UK recolonisation but potentially increasing competition at traditional sites.
