The spotted crake is a secretive wetland bird whose UK population is tiny and vulnerable to habitat degradation and drying of marshes.
Spotted crakes attempting to breed in degraded, dry or disturbed wetlands face poor conditions — food availability drops when soft mud margins are absent, and nest success declines. Their secretive nature means welfare issues go largely undetected. Rewetting of drained marshes and restoration of wet grassland margins provides the habitat structure these birds need for successful breeding.
