The squacco heron is a rare but regular vagrant to UK wetlands from its Mediterranean breeding grounds, a small buff-coloured heron with striking white wings in flight.
As a rare visitor, squacco herons depend on finding suitable wetland habitat to rest and refuel. Human disturbance at wetland sites where rare birds are present can cause birds to abandon productive feeding areas.
