Swift nest boxes provide artificial nesting sites that replace lost cavities in renovated buildings. Proper installation and site selection are critical for successful swift adoption.
Swift nest boxes directly address the primary welfare threat facing swifts: loss of nesting cavities through building renovation and modern construction methods. Each nest box that is adopted by swifts provides a pair of birds with a secure breeding site they may use for 20 years — the entire reproductive life of the individuals. The welfare value of a well-installed, adopted swift box extends across two decades.
Swift boxes also create human connection to wild animal welfare. Nest cameras — affordable and easily installed — provide occupants with direct observation of swift breeding behavior, increasing welfare awareness and advocacy in individuals who experience their swift residents intimately.
Success depends on appropriate height (at least 5m, ideally higher), clear unobstructed flight lines to the box entrance, appropriate box type (closed box with 28mm entrance slot or open-fronted cup), and acoustic attraction using swift call recordings. Boxes should be clustered in groups where possible — swifts are colonial and group nesting increases attraction. Installation before the breeding season (by April) gives the best chance of investigation that season.
