Tawny Owl Nest Boxes: Supporting Urban Populations

Tawny owls nest in tree cavities and can readily adopt nest boxes in gardens and parks. Urban and suburban nest box provision supplements declining natural cavity availability.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Urban tawny owls face particular welfare challenges from road traffic, rodenticide-poisoned prey and cat attacks on fledglings. Fledglings that leave the nest early (a normal behaviour) sit on the ground and are vulnerable to predation and interference. Well-intentioned rescuers who pick up apparently grounded fledglings often cause more harm than good — unless the bird is clearly injured, returning it to a branch near the nest is the correct intervention.
