The Eurasian teal (Anas crecca) is the smallest dabbling duck in Europe. Its welfare is shaped by seasonal demands including Arctic breeding, migratory travel, and winter flocking on wetlands.
Winter welfare depends on access to undisturbed invertebrate-rich mudflats and shallow wetlands. Disturbance from wildfowling and recreational pressure displaces birds from optimal foraging habitat, increasing energy expenditure in cold weather. Lead shot ingestion from hunting remains a welfare concern — teal feed in sediments where spent shot accumulates. Breeding welfare depends on intact moorland and bog habitats with low predator pressure.
