The water rail is a secretive wetland bird that requires extensive reedbeds with open water channels, and is vulnerable to both habitat loss and cold weather mortality.
Water rail welfare is closely tied to the quantity and quality of reedbed habitat. Loss of reedbeds through drainage and coastal squeeze has reduced breeding populations. Cold weather events cause mass mortality as reedbeds freeze and food becomes inaccessible. American mink predation is a significant welfare threat, particularly to nesting birds. Reedbed management including rotational cutting to maintain a mosaic of different aged stands improves habitat quality. Maintaining open water channels within reedbeds during winter is particularly important for water rail survival in cold conditions.
