Water Shrew Welfare in UK Wetlands

The water shrew is Britains largest shrew, semi-aquatic and dependent on clean upland streams and wetlands. Pollution and water quality deterioration threaten welfare and populations.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Water shrew welfare is directly linked to the quality of aquatic habitat within their small territories. Agricultural run-off, silt, and chemical pollution reduce the macroinvertebrate communities that they depend on for food. Their inability to disperse far means local habitat quality changes cannot be compensated by moving to better habitat. Maintenance of clean, well-oxygenated streams with diverse invertebrate communities through riparian management is the most effective welfare intervention for this cryptic and poorly studied species.
