Water voles have been reintroduced to over 100 sites across the UK following mink control programs. Reintroduction welfare considerations include habitat assessment, captive rearing conditions, and post-release monitoring.
Water voles in captive breeding facilities require appropriate riparian habitat simulation including water access, dense vegetation cover, and appropriate soil for burrowing. Release into unfamiliar territories causes acute stress and high initial mortality from predation and dispersal. Monitoring after release allows intervention if populations fail to establish. The welfare cost of translocation is considered acceptable given the catastrophic population decline that reintroduction aims to reverse.
