The whimbrel is a medium-sized wader that passes through UK coasts and estuaries on migration between Arctic breeding grounds and West African wintering areas.
Whimbrel welfare during migratory passage depends on the quality and safety of stopover habitats. Undisturbed coastal grasslands and estuary mudflats allow birds to feed intensively and rebuild fat reserves for the next migration leg. Human disturbance including dog walking and coastal recreation displaces birds from feeding areas. Illegal hunting in parts of southern Europe causes direct mortality. Climate change affects the timing of prey availability at breeding and wintering grounds, potentially causing mismatch. Protection of key passage sites and reduction of illegal hunting on migration routes are the most direct welfare interventions available.
