Whinchat Welfare: Upland Bracken and Rough Grassland Habitat

The whinchat is a declining migratory bird of upland grassland and bracken edges whose welfare depends on insect-rich rough vegetation for breeding and foraging.

Welfare Considerations

Loss of rough upland grassland and bracken habitats through overgrazing, scrub removal and upland improvement has reduced nesting and foraging habitat. Nest predation by foxes, stoats and crows causes welfare impacts through clutch loss and forced re-nesting. Climate change is shifting the timing of invertebrate emergence relative to chick-rearing needs.
