The woodlark requires a mosaic of short grass, bare ground and scattered trees. UK populations are concentrated on southern heathland and Suffolk Breckland.
Woodlark welfare depends on sensitive land management — specifically maintaining the structural mosaic of bare ground, short grass and scrub that they require. Premature vegetation succession through lack of grazing or scrub clearance degrades habitat rapidly. Disturbance during incubation (April-July) causes egg chilling and nest failure.
