Yellow Wagtail Welfare: Arable Farmland Decline

The yellow wagtail is a summer migrant to the UK whose welfare is threatened by the loss of traditional mixed arable farming and wet meadow habitats.

UK yellow wagtail populations have declined by around 75% since the 1970s
They breed in lowland meadows, arable fields and wet grassland across England
Yellow wagtails migrate to sub-Saharan Africa each autumn, covering over 5,000 km
They associate closely with cattle grazing, feeding on insects disturbed by hooves

Welfare Considerations

Loss of mixed arable farming with root crops and spring cereals has reduced nesting habitat and insect food sources. Drainage of wet meadows has eliminated traditional breeding habitat. Competition with livestock for nesting space in increasingly intensive systems is a secondary pressure. Changes to African wintering habitats from agricultural expansion affect survival over winter.
