Yellowhammer Welfare and Hedgerow Habitat

The yellowhammer has declined by 54% since 1970, driven by the loss of mixed farmland and hedgerow nesting habitat. It is a priority farmland bird in UK conservation planning.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Yellowhammer welfare in winter depends on access to spilled grain in stubble fields and weed seed in field margins. Modern cereal cultivation with clean harvesting, rapid ploughing and herbicide treatment eliminates these resources. Nesting in low hedgerow vegetation means that late summer hedge-cutting destroys nests and eggs if timed poorly. Delaying hedge cutting until after September avoids most nesting impacts.
